Major project for Two Rivers Mine

The Two Rivers platinum mine in Limpopo Province opted for DTS (distributed temperature sensing) technology for installation on its conveyor belts. Sperosens completed the project within a month in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis.

DTS is an innovative fibre-optic technology designed for enhanced fire detection. As such, it not only prevents damage to valuable assets, but can save lives and minimise operational downtime in the event of a fire.

Although Sperosens was appointed at the end of 2019 to supply and install the system, physical work on site could only start on 4 May 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. The project was completed on 4 June, much to the satisfaction of the client.

As Theo Olivier of Two Rivers Platinum said:

“I want to thank you and your team for working safely and completing the installation and commissioning in time. You are a well-coordinated team.”

The client implemented strict Covid-19 regulations at all times, including access to the site, induction, social distancing, continuous hand sanitising and wearing of face masks.

According to Project manager Robert Bester belt standing times and the confined work area on the non-walkway side of the conveyor proved a challenge at times. Still, he was complimentary of the customer’s support and of his team:

“All of this was only possible because of the great team. Their willingness and drive made on-time and accurate completion of the Two Rivers project possible.”

The Two Rivers platinum mine concentrator plant is situated in the Sekhukhune district of Limpopo, between Steelpoort and Lydenburg.

The AP sensing fibre fire detection system covers both sides of the primary surface conveyor, silo conveyor and plant feed conveyor over a distance of over three kilometres.

Maintenance will be conducted on the basis of call-outs, but longer term maintenance will be planned for the new financial year.

The Sperosens DTS fiber-optic linear heat detection system not only detects fires, but can accurately track the extent and direction of a spreading fire regardless of prevailing air currents. DTS is the industry's fastest fire detection method with the lowest false alarm rate, with almost no maintenance required. No other fire detection system can withstand temperatures up to 1 000°C (1 800°F) without losing monitoring capability. This novel feature enables fire-fighting countermeasures to be used most effectively during any fire event. The solution includes certified, maintenance-free sensor cables with an expected lifespan of 30 years.

Sperosens provides innovation through the design, manufacturing, installation, management and maintenance of safety solutions. This enables our clients to focus on their core business.
